just a word of advice

if you can, see akron/family. and see them with about 5 friends. in a bar where there is no stage and you are 2 people away from the bearded lead singer. and know as many lyrics as possible, cause there will be too many sing alongs to count. and don't be afraid to dance, make noises and act however you want.

with the intensity of Metalica, the lyrics of an enlightened one, the headbands of heros, and the beats of tribal societies, it might just be one of the best concerts you have ever been to. period.

and please. spread love.

dream or memory

i had a dream that i was a little boy, with a sister, and we were being baby-sat. and i was trying really hard to get the baby-sitter alone. i think i had a at least a crush on her.

and i want to say that maybe this actually happened when i was a little kid. weird.

just a thought

whats giving me the most excitement besides the new nin video on youtube, is thinking about what is kind of set up for me in life and not doing it. doing things that i dont normally do. haven't thought about doing and are unsure of.

FW:

Sometimes my hopes and desires of what i want to be true cloud the realities of the situation. Especially personal characteristics of others.

i've told them they were just in my dreams

ever since i watched 'wakign life' last week for the second time, I've been trying harder and harder to recognize that I am in a dream when I am in one at night. I am not doign a dream journal which would be easier. But, i have looked at a clock and i have told people, one two occasions that they were just figments of my imagination.

two problems though.
-the clock did not go all crazy
-the times i told people they were dreams, i wasn't too sure for myself, and I dreaming within my dream. or something like that.

i'm going to keep trying. i think another time i kind of started to talk and walk the way i wanted to. but it didn;t really 'fee;' like i was controlling it anymore than before.

so maybe i am just dreaming that i am taking control of my dream and not really taking control of my dreams.

haha, now that would be an interesting one.

still going to look for a light switch.

Grateful Dead Archives Given to UCSC

Re: Grateful Dead Archives Given to UCSC

It is a thrill to write to tell you that the surviving members of the iconic rock 'n' roll band, the Grateful Dead, have selected the UCSC Library as the permanent home for their substantial archive of materials documenting the band's history. The collection will be the largest donation ever made to the library's Special Collections Department, and it includes more than 2,000 square feet of memorabilia, artifacts, and other documents. This incomparable archive will undoubtedly become a major resource for research related to the Grateful Dead, the phenomenon of the Deadheads, American music, and popular culture during the last three decades of the 20th century.

matty mcbride

senior year of high school gave me a cd chock full of post-rock maddness:
explosions in the sky
do make say think
god is an astronaut
a silver mt. zion
belle orchestre
mogwai
and

godspeed you! black emperor

and three years later, i am here in snata cruz really truly digging for the first time, the epic album that is: Lift your skinny fists like Antennas to Heaven

i have tried so many times. but finally today. it all has clicked.

please always share music with people. even if it doe snot immediately lead to anything, all hope is not lost. the future still holds endless, endless possibilities.

still, it lingers

the excessive number of hacky-sacks, weed shirts, rasta dreads, and floppy hats have left the santa cruz area for now. one of my teachers directed me towards an article in the local santa cruz paper on the subject and it has some funny commentary and insight in it if you feel like reading something about yesterdays festivities.

titled: Up in smoke: Thousands of students gather for potfest at UCSC

a photographer was there and he took some pictures for the paper. my head is somewhere in this picture i'm sure.

heres the article.

so so so so silly.

"the holiday of holidays"-brian tritch

so last year i was at a study session and i had no idea what was going to go on. but this year i went out to the meadow to witness being surrounded by something like 1,000 people smoking weed. it was pretty crazy. to say the least. i shuttled like 10 people on to campus in various waves to get them past the cops. for those of you who don't go to santa cruz, today was a huge holiday where thousands of students and others flock to the porter meadow i the afternoon to smoke weed. on thursday afternoon we were emailed the below letter about regulations. pretty ridiculous. from what i can tell, it was nothing less than the year before in spite of the enforcements.

it was really incredible that so many people were all gathered together just to get high. imagine swarms of people everywhere like at a concert, but there was no band. just pounds of weeds smoked in like 10 minutes.

time to go research.

Re: "4-20" Activity

April 20th (4-20) has become known nationwide as the date when people gather to communally smoke marijuana in an expression of support for the reform of marijuana laws. In recent years, thousands of people have gathered on the UCSC campus to participate in this event.

The University does not condone, support or otherwise sanction this event. The increasingly large crowds that have gathered in recent years present safety risks for participants, whether students or people not affiliated with the campus. This activity also violates a number of campus regulations designed to provide for the well-being of our campus and neighboring community.

In anticipation of this year's April 20 activity, I have authorized the implementation of a number of restrictions for this coming weekend, April 19-20. This communication is intended to alert the community of the transportation changes, parking restrictions, and other actions that will limit access to campus.

This advance notification is provided to enable those who have valid reasons for coming to campus this weekend to adjust their schedules and transportation plans accordingly:

o The West Entrance to campus will be closed to inbound vehicular traffic on Sunday.

o The Main Entrance will be open that day, but campus personnel will restrict vehicular access to people who have UCSC parking permits or who can show evidence they are attending sanctioned campus events that day.

o Parking permits will be required in all campus lots throughout the weekend, even in those that typically require no permits on weekends. The parking restriction will include evening hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. (If you need to park on campus this weekend and do not currently have a permit, you will need to purchase one by 6 p.m. on Friday.)

o At our request Metro bus drivers will not bring riders onto campus on Sunday. The only "campus" stop, coming to and from UCSC, will be the one adjacent to the Main Entrance on Empire Grade. (If disability transportation is needed as a result of this restriction, special van service on campus can be requested at this one bus stop.)

o There will be no on-campus shuttle service during the day on Sunday.

o Empire Grade will be designated as a tow-away zone, and vehicles that illegally park on Empire Grade during the weekend will be ticketed and may be towed at the owners' expense. Extra patrols will be on duty to enforce these restrictions.

o Drivers and passengers who can't prove that they have a legitimate reason to be on campus on Sunday will be turned away at the main gate. People can anticipate that there will be delays at the Main Entrance's kiosk.

Please remember that all UCSC students, staff and their guests are expected to comply with University policy and federal and state law.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

hang-over saturday

i breached all possible limits last night on an empty stomach and am paying for it today. But today i had an interesting experience.

my friend left her computer in my car last night and i forgot to bring it with me when we came back so i had to go get it today. the parking lot on campus is a good 15 minute walk down hill so i decided to bring my big headphones and listen to nick drake in my hazy state. it was really windy and all i could hear was the guitar and his voice. it was really pleasant to see the wind in the trees and feel it but not hear it. and it totally reminded me of the vw commercial that i saw as a kid. very similar feelings. especially when i was walking back in the forest.

an afternoon journey

so after volunteering this afternoon and before my shower, i decided to wash my car in santa cruz, which i've never done before. i knew there was a 'do it yourself' type thing that i'd never done before so i decided i do it there since i have no hose on campus here. so i went to the store and bought soap and a sponge for the extravaganza. got to the place and learned that it only takes bills, no coins, and that i didn't need anythign at all cause it was all provided.

so i had two bucks, that i had saved from a psychology experiment from fall quarter in my moleskin waiting to be used at teh right time, and 3 bucks in quarters. changed one of the quarters for a dollar from a nice girl doing the same activity. got 6 tokens. learned that it takes 5 tokens to start and it last 4 minutes. and one coin is like 38 seconds or something.

so i'm like damn, i am going to have to make this quick. The water hose doesn't work for the first 30 seconds. but their soap brush is super wicked and does an awesome ass job. and the water sprayer eventually was like a freaking water machine gun.

but it stops before i can finish the driver's side. so i go to my friend josh's house to finish the job. but he has no hose. so i use a cup to finish off the soap. and the sponge to try and dry it.

:-) all i could do was laugh at myself as i was driving down mission with soap on my car.

explosions in the sky-All Tomorrows Parties Festival

So i know most people have heard about this festival, but i think the line-up is practically complete at this point. And of all the festivals that are going on this spring or summer, this would undeniably be the one that i would go to. and the only one too for that matter, and i would be satisfied. Unfortunately though, its in england. On a resort. I mean, come on and just imagine the possibilities. All of these bands are there for the weekend. You are bound to not onyl see most of them, but even maybe run into them at one of the pubs or something. Pure euphoric extravaganza that I will be missing out on. If it was anywhere in the states or even Canada, I'd take out a loan in a heartbeat. And maybe I should. Too bad though its sold out. :-(

Here are all of the bands that I would look forward to seeing:
Explosions in the Sky
Animal Collective
Broken Social Scene
Iron and Wine
Dinosaur Jr.
Eluvium
The Paper Chase
Four Tet
Ghostface Killah
Adem
Mono
The Drift
Sunset Rubdown
Lichens
Stars of the Lid
Saul Williams (!!)
Battles
The Octopus Project
World's End Girlfriend
Beach House

Such an awesome thing to go see
